Casa Rosa
The house viewed from the road.Located near some of western Sicily's most enchanting historical attractions, as well as three beaches, this charming farm cottage (not a "villa," strictly speaking) accomodates four. It has a master bedroom (with a spacious matrimonial bed), a second bedroom (with two single beds) and, in addition to the the kitchen and indoor dining room, an outdoor cooking area and patio that's partly enclosed. The roof, reached from outdoor stairs, is a terrace suitable for dining or even sunbathing.

It's on a hill east of Termini Imerese, convenient to Cefalù (about 20 minutes away), surrounded by olive groves and a few vineyards --even a flock of grazing sheep. The epitome of rural solitude, with a view of the coast a mile below. The city of Termini isn't extremely interesting, though it does have a good local museum and some charming streets and churches, and the remains of a Roman acqueduct, in its historical centre, on high ground overlooking the rest of the town. And while you'll need a car to get around, the local train station is a hub for frequent departures on the Agrigento, Messina and Caltanissetta lines.

What really makes this farm house appealing is its position, and its close distance to the beautiful medieval coastal town of Cefalù. It's just a little bit beyond the tourist circuit, and that's one of the best things about it. Normally, rentals offering this kind of rural environment are found much farther inland. this house offers the best of two worlds --rustic ambience and the coast conveniently nearby.

Reached by following a winding country road (watch for speeding motor scooters around the sharp curves!), the house itself is a typically rustic Sicilian structure, simple but comfortable, and convenient to some intimate beaches and fascinating historical sites. For a fraction of the price of a week in a resort hotel or pricey villa, your group of four can enjoy all the advantages of this part of the Sicilian coast. And, depending on your sense of adventure, you can visit Palermo, Sicily's chaotic but fascinating regional capital. (A train ride into the city takes just about 25 minutes, eliminating the need for battling traffic trying to find parking space.)
